During initial survey and later maintenance, measurements and marks go wrong. The job of maintenance is to find those errors, decide whether they are within allowable limits, and correct records or ground marks under proper authority. Always confirm current departmental limits with your Deputy Inspector / AD Survey — figures below are teaching norms, not a gazette.
1. Types of error you will meet
| Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Linear / angular | Chain stretch, wrong offset, bad theodolite angle |
| Plotting | Wrong scale, reverse orientation, missed bend on FMB |
| Stone / mark | Missing, shifted, or wrongly planted survey stone |
| Record | RSR/FMB/Adangal extent mismatch; wrong sub-division note |
| Boundary dispute | Not a “measurement bug” alone — may need notice, enquiry, or court |
2. Allowable error (training orientation)
Maintenance manuals quote different tolerances for short F-lines vs long lines and for new survey vs maintenance. Typical teaching tables distinguish:
- Survey stage — tighter relative error on new measurements.
- Maintenance stage — slightly wider tolerance when recovering old work, still not unlimited.
Example pattern (illustrative only): short F-lines (e.g. up to a few chains) have a small absolute allowance; longer lines use a proportional limit. If your office has a printed table, use that table.
3. How rectification usually works
- Detect — party petition, stone missing, area mismatch, or inspection note.
- Re-measure — from intact control (G-line, trijunctions, known stones).
- Compare — ground vs FMB vs RSR/Adangal.
- Classify
- Within limit → note and accept / minor correction.
- Beyond limit → correct FMB/sketch after scrutiny, or re-survey portion.
- Title / enjoyment conflict → escalate to revenue enquiry; surveyor does not decide title.
- Sanction — changes to village accounts via proper register (often 8A) after DI Survey scrutiny where required.
- Replace marks — plant stones as per S&B Act rules; never invent a stone without measurement.
4. Area mismatches (RSR vs plotted)
- Boundary prevails over written extent in many training principles — but rateable adjustment and area errata rules still apply.
- Use office tools to quantify difference: RSR/FMB area error adjuster, land area calculator.
- Do not silently alter extents without tahsildar / DI Survey path.
5. Missing stone / bend (field)
- Identify intact points from FMB.
- Use chain + offset, or NOS method if a bend is gone: NOS cutting point guide.
- Verify two independent measures before planting.
6. What surveyors must not do
- Decide ownership or easement rights in a pure “error fix”.
- Dispossess or induct parties.
- Change records without notice/enquiry where statute requires it.
